Critical Factors in Evaluating SEO Competitors

July 30, 2019/by Carmel Lago

I am pretty sure that we have all had our own fair share of healthy competition. Almost every aspect of our lives, competition is existent, and I even talked about competition in the world of SEO. Remember the old adage? Nothing is ever constant in the world, but change!

Well, that’s true! Everything is figured out, and now, people are just constantly finding ways to reinvent old ways. Finding ways to rehash traditional systems into something new and different. Same is true with search engine optimization and brand building.

Nothing is a new discovery, everything is innovated, re-imagined and transformed into a new form. When it comes to optimizing your website, your rivals are a actually a great avenue for you to pick up a few strategies. Your enemies can turn into your friends by being your company’s little puddle or pool of knowledge. You can learn a lot from their existing system, and apply it to your own routine.

don’t just attack; plan your moves well!

Before you go and spy on your competitors for strategies, here are a few critical factors you need to consider:

  • Know your online competition.

    • You need to have an adequate level of knowledge about your online competitors.
    • Their online transactions may be handled differently from the offline transactions. Do your own keyword research!
    • In the digital space, you need to outshine them and find ways to rank better than them in search.
  • Know where they are engaged.

    • It is not just enough to know who your rivals are, but you also need to know where they are.
    • If you know where your rivals are actively or passively engaged, then, you will know where to stay.
    • Of course,  if you notice that your target audience is on Facebook, then, you would naturally create a page on Facebook. Link this page to your website so that when you publish new content, it will also published on Facebook.
    • It’s as simple as that. Follow where your people are.
  • Know what your rivals do.

    • If they are hitting the right spots, then, learn from it. You need to follow and innovate only the things that are optimizing the content. Study what is working for them so that you can apply it in own your search engine optimization strategies.
  • Find out also the flops.

    • Once you know where the are focusing majority of their efforts on, you need to analyze what is or is not working. When you know that this strategy is NOT working, then abandon it. Be aware of the things are doing no good to their business just so you can avoid doing the same to your website. Learn what could go wrong!
    • You need to know what is driving them off the cliff so you wont make the same mistakes. In this way, you can prevent yourself from investing effort, money and time.
  • Know their level of investment.

    • It is important for you to know the extent of commitment your rivals have for certain things in their online business for you to also exert the same level of investment in your own business. It is not enough to be on par with them, you need to outshine them.
    • If you realize that they are exerting effort in content development, then, raise the bar higher and produce better content.

A Healthy Competition in SEO

July 30, 2019/by Carmel Lago

Acknowledging the fact that there will be a certain level of competition in almost every aspect of life.

In our daily lives, competition is extremely normal and very healthy. In every industry, be it the food industry, cosmetics, retail, even service providing entities, competition is evidently present and that is completely okay.

women playing soccer in an open field

Like any sport, SEO is a competition too!

Even in the industry of SEO, a healthy competition is vital.

Why if you may ask?

  • Competition, even in a general sense, exists for the prevention of complacency and over-confidence. It keeps you motivated to always do a better job, to innovate, to excel. Because you are aware that your competitor is just right in the corner, it keeps you going. Perhaps, they are planning their own tactics to bring you down. Haha, you will be paranoid on what their next move is.

In this article, I will be discussing a very important topic and that is how to identify your search engine optimization competitors.

How exactly do you identify your main rivals?

This is not as easy as it sounds. Because you may think that in a particular industry, those who are on top of the leader board, but to be honest dear, that is not necessarily true.

Not at all times. You main competition is not always the front runners.

It does not really matter how big their names are in the industry, that does not automatically make them a threat to your website.

Keep these things in mind:

  • Your top SEO competitors are the people who rank the same keywords as you.
  • If a company targets your keywords, then, they are a “competitor.”
  • Whether they are a business related to your brand or not, they will be “competitor” if you are after the same set of keywords.

Basically, let us just say that you are into a cosmetics line… So, as expected, your rivals are also fellow cosmetic brands. If you search, say for example, “the best foundation for oily skin”, there will be thousands of search results. These websites will be your competitor in terms of search ranking.

There are also blog sites that are not in the cosmetic industry, but are posting about “dos and don’ts of makeup.” See, these seemingly insignificant websites can still affect you. Surely, they will end up competing with. In search results, you with both compete for beauty and makeup keywords.

Do a keyword search.

Luckily, seeking out your competitors is an easy task. For starters, you can do a Google search on the keywords you want to rank. This will reveal who are the “top” sites for this keyword.

Then, you can take note of these websites. You can also use keyword research tools that are available online.

Tools such as Google Adwords, KeywordTool.io, WordTracker, KWFinder, WordStream (and more!) will do the heavy lifting for you. These are just some of the FREE keyword tools out there!

Search engine optimization is a tricky and complicated system to master. In the SEO community, competition is very tight. You need not to worry though, just as long as you are able to identify your top competitors, study a thing or two about how they operate, then you can definitely develop an amazing SEO strategy that can launch your website to success.

What Could Go Wrong in SEO?

July 30, 2019/by Carmel Lago

After studying content, page speed, and links in search engine optimization, you might think you have it all figured out.

Think again, my friend, because there are still more to learn.

man lying on bed with laptop on top of chest

Worrying on what could go wrong on your website.

You may have gathered all that there is to perfect your search engine optimization strategy, but there are certain things that could still go wrong. Believe me, in a perfect world, everything that was taught to you about search engine optimization could be enough but let us face it, we need a reality check.

What exactly could go wrong is search engine optimization?

Three things:

  • You can get over-aggressive with SEO strategies and apply too much,
  • You may do things that are wrong in the context of Google because of the lack of awareness,
  • Tendency to use shady or spammy tactics ( totally not classy!)

 How to get through this?

  •  First of all, always go back to basics. Trust that what you know about search engine optimization is already sufficient to the optimization of your website.
  • Think of it this way, it is just like putting on make up. You just basically have to study your face, learn what works for you, what shades and hues complements your eyes or your lips, and just enhance the features of your face. Not because you have a hundred pounds of make up layered to your face, then it automatically makes you instantly more attractive. No, that’s not how it works. Just apply enough to let the natural features shine. Same goes with search engine optimization strategies, it is best to not OVERDO it.
  • You may think you are adding more value to your website, but you may be adding more burden than actual value to it. Remember that even in search engine optimization, less is definitely more.
  • Secondly, research well. This is in contrast to the first one.  On the actual application, you will implement less. Before you go to apply the best SEO strategy for your site, you need to research first. You need to know everything, every move that you make, what goes around in the same industry that you are in, what the prohibitions are to avoid sanctions and penalties and more. With the right knowledge of SEO, you are sure that you won’t bark on the wrong tree.
  • Lastly, do not ever resort to shady tactics. You need to instill trust and confidence into what you have learned about search engine optimization and develop strategies and techniques in good faith. If you start to apply questionable strategies, it will definitely affect your website. Also, it could ruin the trust of your existing and potential customers.

You can’t avoid mistakes.

In every line of business, there will always be loopholes, even to the most perfectly thought of system because that is inevitable. Remember, when you falter, go back to the basics. What is important in SEO?

  1. developing excellent content that satisfies the users’ wants
  2. improve page speed and user experience
  3. obtain high-quality links and brand mentions from reputable sites

What matters most is you focus on your strengths, develop a great plan, and execute everything in good faith.

The Role of Social Media in SEO

July 29, 2019/by Carmel Lago

Social media is probably one of the most, if not the most powerful platform in the whole world.

If you want to be famous you can easily just post something in any social media platforms, gather as many likes and shares possible.

Then, bam! Just like that you are going to be a social media royalty.  That is how incredibly amazing social media can be. So, imagine what it can do if you use it to your website’s advantage.

If you can manage to get a very strong social media back-up, you can very easily share your content to large volume of people. But hold that though first, there is of course a catch. In order for you do to so, you need to build a positive imagery with your audience.

social media icon on an iphone 6

How do you do that exactly?

Simply, you have to start by creating positive interactions with people within your industry. It is crucial to maintain harmonious relationships with the people within the same industry so you can be on their good side.

To land on a better position, you also need to create the right and appropriate contents.

A  trusted study studied over a million articles to try to determine the relationship between shares and links. This study showed that across the complete article set, there was almost no correlation at all. Despite that, a much more detailed report showed that some types of content are doing way better than others.

To be very specific, articles that are published for making opinions from trusted experts, and  research studies showed a strong correlation between shares and links.

Once you have marked your place in the market, social media’s role should be easy peasy.

You just need to utilize social media to expose your amazing content!

Well, that is basically it. The rest of it all will come smooth as paper if you use social media the right way. It is remotely possible that any major search engines will use links in social media posts as an authority signal. To clear things, social media does not influence search engine rankings. However, it can promote your website.

Through social media, your content will be advertised to a larger audience. The more it gets shared, the more clicks you will get for your website.

The main point of this really is to:

  1. use social media to your full advantage,
  2. create a great relationship with trustworthy influencers,
  3. build their trust and confidence with your brand,
  4. and this will be an opportunity to gather reliable links.

That is how you should use social media to boost your website.

Social media is a great way to widen your horizon in terms of likes and shares. It is for you to reach as many people as you can because literally everyone cannot get off of social media.

Just imagine having a very popular and trusted social media account. You will surely reach people from all over the world! Whether they are just ordinary customers or A-list celebrities, receiving a mention or a positive review on social media really helps. Any published contents will be flooded with viewers all the time.

How Is Relevance Relevant to SEO?

July 29, 2019/by Carmel Lago

In a general sense, relevance is defined as “the quality or state of being closely connected or appropriate.”

To put it in the simplest way possible, when something is relevant, it basically means that it matters.

So enough defining things, now that we have unraveled what relevance really means, it is just about time to relate it to our topic – search engine optimization.

Choose your words tiles

This is a reminder to choose relevant keywords.

How is relevance relevant to the study of search engine optimization?

See what I did there? Okay, on to the topic… Imagine, if you are in the business of food, and let us say that you manage an online food business. Of course, you would want to promote your business for it to reach millions of people.

Naturally, your website or any part of your website would never use the words “summer fashion,” “clothes,” “apparel,” “lipstick” and so on. This is not an online clothing store, or a business of selling clothes.

In the digital world, these simple things like ranking for relevant keywords related to your line of business. So, it does not matter how many links you really get, you will never in a million years rank for queries or searches that are related to an online clothing shop.

If you use it to your advantage, you could reach your target audience.

Now, imagine, you having the same online business, an online food shop and you get links from a very successful chef’s page or a trusted online market’s blog?

Imagine, what that huge influence can do to your humble online shop, right? It could give you the opportunity to branch out to different people and to reach millions and millions of customers and I am not even exaggerating. When you very relevant link from a reputable person, this changes the game. Compared to the first example, this second scenario is ideal.

Links and relevance are closely associated.

To break it down very clearly, you basically just need to be involved with links that can do good to your page.

Keep the links that are related to your line of business or content in general for it to reach your target market. In short, the relevance of the linking page, and the linking site, impacts how valuable a link might be considered.

That is how relevance generally works.

The main point of this article is for search engine optimization professionals or even the enthusiasts to understand that quality matters.

At the end of the day, it is really not about the number of links or mentions that you get.

More than anything else, consider the relevancy and the quality of the links to your website.

if you get a million links from a page that is completely unrelated to your website, it does not really count as “good” link. Google might be suspicious that you are getting links from questionable sites. So, do not even bother thinking about it. You can disavow shady links; just read Google’s guide on how to properly disavow links.

Always go for quality!

Whether it is food or clothes, we are always looking for the best quality. In SEO, do the same. Prioritize quality over quantity and substance over form.

Aside from Content, What Are the Other SEO Factors?

July 29, 2019/by Carmel Lago

After learning about the very importance of content, now,  it is about time to get more technical with search engine optimization. This might seem very complex, but trust me, this should be the first thing that you need to perfect if you want to rank in search engines.

In today’s article,  we are going to be talking about performance.

Performance could mean many things. In search engine optimization and in the online industry, this easily means how your website operates. To put it better, how well your website operates. How convenient is it for your viewers? How fast? What are they getting out of visiting your page? If you are going to measure search engine optimization performance, these are the basic questions that you need to ask.

car running at a lightning fast speed.

The most important factor of performance though is speed.

Speed is a necessary factor in maximizing your websites accessibility because this affects customer experience.

Imagine, you are going to a diner and you are ordering your favorite food, but it took them an eternity to get it done?

Imagine, you are ordering something online, and it’s something that you really need to wear for an event that is going to happen 3 days from now. However, the shipping company delivered it way past its due date.  I should know how it feels, I have experienced my fair share of waiting and more.  Let me tell you one thing for sure, there are plenty of things we should be patient with but how fast your load pages should never be one of it.

So how fast should a page load exactly?

There should be no better answer than “as fast as possible” and I could not agree more. Ideally, a page should load within 2 or 3 seconds max. That is how fast your very own page should work if we talk about effective performance.

Another things is you need to make sure that you will check your website’s so called  “waterfall”, and you can use webpagetest or GT metrix. These are the sites that will show how your website will come together as it loads.

Once you paste your web address, the testing website should be able to give you a detailed report on:

  • Performance score
  • Yslow score
  • The waterfall chart
  • Page details such as the page load time and the page size
  • Page load details for videos and filmstrips

There are also other page speed metrics that will displayed, and it depends on the tool you will use. So, don’t delay and you better check how fast your website loads ASAP. Before you blow your viewers mind with your amazing content and extraordinary web designs, you need to make sure that the people can access your website as fast as possible.

Make sure that before diving in to the more complicated parts of search engine optimization, you ensure that above everything else your page should load within the ideal time because this greatly affects customer’s perception and experience of and with your website. We really do not want to piss of our beloved viewers by making them wait long just for them to see your content, right? Your content is amazing and it should not take forever before you let the world see it.

Is Content The Most Important Factor In SEO?

July 29, 2019/by Carmel Lago

Of course, it is undeniable that the content that you put out there is the very core of your website or your brand.

In general, content is the first thing we consider, but is it the most significant aspect in improving search performance? Is it the most important factor in search engine optimization?

person writing ideas on her desk

Is content really important?

There Are Other Factors Aside from Content.

While I may agree that your content is basically the lifeblood of your website, however, it is not mere content alone.

It is the reason people visit your website of course and the very goal of search engine optimization is to maximize your content’s exposure so that many viewers can see it.

As content creators, bloggers, vloggers, online entrepreneurs, online influencers, even online advocates, or whatever we may call ourselves, we need to deviate from the popular opinion. As long as we have a fun and interesting content, we tend to slack off. We don’t focus on all of the other valuable aspects that help build the entirety of our brand.

No Compromises.

It is imperative to make it a goal to put a hundred percent of effort  in creating amazing contents. However, we should not compromise everything that comes along with it.

Honestly speaking, no search engine optimization factor has greater value than content. We should really weigh on what is important for our brand.

You cannot just give every bit of your time and effort in making sure your content is top-notch while compromising other important factors. Of course, you need to consider the technical issues, usage of links, your web design, accessibility, usability as well. Everything should go hand in hand if you really want to optimize search to its maximum potential.

One aspect will never work without the other, and vice versa. That is what we really need to bear in our minds.

So, if you want you content to really reach more people, you have to make sure to keep in mind that:

  • you need to make sure your website is accessible,
  • to minimize technical issues,
  • to maximize usage of links,
  • and to make sure that your overall design and feel is enticing for your viewers.

If your website is not easily accessible and if does not appear in the search results, then, your content, no matter how phenomenal it is, will not mean anything.

Go Beyond Content.

Again, content is something you want to come across virtually to your viewers, but it is not all there is.

Do not get me wrong though, content is extremely important, but so are the other factors in search engine optimization.  Your action plan should be clear and direct:

  1. create contents that are interesting for your viewers,
  2. but do not ever neglect or overlook its search capability,
  3. and most importantly your customer’s experience

Before, during and after a web visitor has browsed your website, there should be that overall pleasant experience. Not just in the content, but also in the design, in the usability, and in the applicability. As much as as possible, think of all of the factors equally for you to also reach the perfect equilibrium of success.

SEO Tip: Stop Overlooking Technical Problems

July 29, 2019/by Carmel Lago

Generally, many things could go wrong in search engine optimization or in building your brand. While the heart and core of your beloved website, is of course the content that you put out for people to see.

person having problems upon looking at his laptop

We, the content providers, should also take into consideration what our users will go through before viewing our works. I cannot put enough emphasis on the fact that: above everything else, the very goal is to satisfy our readers. Of course, they are the lifeblood of every website’s very existence.

Without the people reading, buying, or browsing, websites are useless.

To cut it short, it all boils down to customer experience. One major aspect that affects that is your site’s convenience. You need to think whether your customers are having a hard time accessing your contents or not. Because of technical concerns that are sometimes overlooked, we fail to provide the best user experience. In this article, that is what I will try to explain in detail.

How does it affect search engine optimization?

  • Again, it is not just enough to boost the content itself, it is also imperative to boost its accessibility.
  • There have been a few technical search engine optimization audits and I need to add the fact that most of these alarming issues greatly affect the website’s search capability and performance.
  • Optimizing through focusing on your contents and making sure what you put out there for everyone to see is actually worth seeing is great, but it is of no use if your actual site’s accessibility is a pain to go through because of common technical issues.
  • Imagine, clicking to a site because you are drawn to their interface, their design, their actual content, but while scrolling and scrolling, you experience technical problems every now and then? Well, I have experienced that countless of times and I always clicked out of the freaking site and look for a site that has similar content.

See? These technical problems hurts the whole search performance by ruining the customer’s overall experience. At the end of the day, people want less hassle and more convenience.

Here are examples of the most common technical problems to be aware of:

  • Improper redirects,
  • Slow page load time,
  • mobile errors,
  • duplicate content, and
  • unintentional blocked pages.

These may be minor issues as compared to a lot of the other things that you know about search engine optimization, but let me tell you, these problems really do pack a punch and could cost you your entire website.

Conclusion

To wrap things up, the solution to this is direct and simple. You just have to make sure you lessen these types of problems. Gather your team of experts, and:

  • run checks from time to time for quality control,
  • keep in touch with your customers through their feedbacks regarding the overall experience of your site.

Again, technical issues are inevitable and errors will happen. You can never really get rid of them, but what you can do though is minimize them. Just make sure that all your contents are accessible and your overall website is user-friendly and interesting enough for people to view.

How Much Time Does Search Engine Optimization Needs?

July 29, 2019/by Carmel Lago

To be honest, it really depends. There is no better answer than “it just depends.”

If we talk about definite time frames, then, I would not really be able to provide you a specific answer. Because unlike all the other topics about search engine optimization that are easy and teachable, the amount of time that SEO needs is far more complex and hard to determine.

person holding a clock.

SEO is a long-term investment.

Why if you may ask?

  • Well, aside from all of the aspects that are involved in developing your very own brand’s search engine optimization strategies. In addition to everything that comes along with it, there are research and development, marketing, tactics, etc.,
  • Also, one should not neglect that the strategies of your competitors are of the same value and importance. Imagine, having to develop your own brand’s tactics while simultaneously studying your competition.
  • It will take you forever, no exaggeration. In this article, I will be talking more about the significant role that your competition play in developing your search engine optimization strategy.

Let us start by talking about why we also need to study our competition.

Of course, if you are in an industry that provides specific products and services that a lot of people patronizing, you always need to give it your best shot and that involves benchmarking.

  • Benchmarking is when you evaluate or check (something) by comparison with a standard . If you want your brand to be successful, one major trick is to really be familiar with how the industry that you are in work.

It is basically like courtship in men’s perspective.  If  a guy is really into a girl, he would set his best foot forward at all times and he would study how she would get the girl’s attention. Not only that though, of course, he would anticipate his competition. There will be a lot of other guys who would also race to get the girl’s precious little heart right?

So, a guy who really loves the girl would also study how to outshine all those other guys that are also vying to get the girl.

A form of healthy competition.

  • Studying your rivals techniques is good way to get familiar with how they work in your industry in order for you to know how they will move. It is a good way to know strategies that could also work to your advantage.
  • The higher the demand for the products and services that your industry offer, the higher the potential of existing and new competitors.
  • The more demand increases, your competition will also up their game. They will do whatever it should take to outshine their competition.
  • You can learn a thing or two from your competition and that is a guarantee. Your competition is not just there to give you a good game, you can actually benefit from them as well.

One thing that you need to learn about search engine optimization is that it is tricky and you need to gather as much resources as you can even and especially from your very own rivals. Like what they always say, even in the SEO industry, keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

What’s In An SEO Report

July 4, 2019/by Ed Smith

When you hire an SEO agency on a monthly container, you should be expecting a report every month. Every agency does reports differently, however. But regardless of what it looks like, the report should provide you with all of the results of the agency’s work and the benefits for your business.

This often isn’t the case, however. Most SEO reports either contain too little detail or contain so much information that it is confusing for business owners. This can be very misleading for business owners and cause them to work with an SEO agency for too long even when they aren’t producing the results.

Understanding what to expect from an SEO report can help you find an SEO agency that can trust. And that’s exactly what we’re going to do here.

What are the Basics of an SEO Report

There are a few things that an SEO report should contain, they include data on:

  • Traffic
  • Conversions
  • Rankings

These three factors account for the main general goals of SEO: to improve visibility in Google, to increase traffic and to get more customers.

What Else to Look For in an SEO Report

This isn’t all an SEO report should contain, however. There are several other things that should be included to make the report readable and valuable.

1. SEO Metrics

Metrics allow SEO agencies to present their efforts and results in a format that is easy for clients to understand. Mapping key metrics to graphs can let business owners quickly see how successful efforts have been.

These shouldn’t just be any combination of metrics. These metrics should coincide with your business and SEO objectives. There’s no point doing SEO for the sake of it. There has to be a goal to the process and these are the metrics that should be detailed in your report.

This could include:

  • Traffic to particular pages or parts of your website
  • Rankings on particular keywords
  • On-page stats such as site speed
  • Conversion rates

2. Analysis

The metrics mentioned above should be easy enough to understand on their own. But that doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be any commentary on them. There should also be analysis provided by the SEO company that provides some commentary on the metrics and helps business owners to understand them.

This shouldn’t be too technical, however. When techical SEO jargon is used, business owners can be left confused. The more open, honest and plain the commentary is, the better the company tends to be.

3. Next Steps

If you are getting an SEO report, the chances are that you will have entered into an ongoing relationship with an SEO company. As part of the report, therefore, there should be notes on what will be happening to your site and social presence next month. If the company can’t explain what they are going to do for you, what are you paying them for.
