Linkhelpers SEO – 3 Reasons Why Your Website Has a Huge Bounce Rate

January 10, 2020/by Carmel Lago

For sure, webmasters would want their respective websites to have a high traffic, high conversion rate, and high sales. We all want money coming in! Absolutely!

However, when it’s the bounce rate that is soaring high, no one wants it. The other stats could go up except the bounce rate because it ain’t a good indication. It definitely a thing you should be concerned about.

So, let’s define BOUNCE RATE.

For the information of everyone, a bounce rate means the number of web visitors that abandon the page and “bounces back” to the SERPs. Thus, the name bounce rate.

When the user quickly clicks the back button, it’s not a good sign. Of course, you would want a user to view the different pages of your website.

According to GoRocketFuel.com, the average bounce would be around 41% to 55%. For most sites, the numbers could be around 26% to 70%. Here’s the breakdown:

  • 26-40%: This is the ideal number you should aim for!
  • 41-55%: Just okay.
  • 56-70%: Higher than usual, but it is within the acceptable range.
  • Higher than 70%: Now, this is terrible!

If you want to know the bounce rate of your site, simply go to Google Analytics and click on the Audience Overview section. On the behavior column, you can also see the bounce rate for the individual pages of your website.

Is the bounce rate climbing up?

What are the reasons why a website has towering high bounce rate?

Below, I will be discussing the usual reasons why it’s bad.

  1. Incorrectly setting up your Google Analytics account.

Before I go into the specific details, be sure that there’s nothing wrong with your Google Analytics account. The bounce rate could be because you did not add specific tracking codes. So, check on your tag setup first.

Google created a help page on how to fix your tag setup.

  1. Inappropriate title and meta description

It’s important to do a self-evaluation, and honestly answer the question, Is the title and meta description correctly describing the contents of the page?

Remember, exaggerating such details might not be helpful for you. People will quickly saying you are merely clickbaiting users to click on your website.

If you think there’s some mistake, then, don’t hesitate to edit the page title and the meta description. Take time to review the titles of each page of your website, and give it a more appropriate title and meta description if necessary.

  1. Website may contain a blank page, a 404 error, or other technical errors.

Next, you have to fix any errors. Maybe your bounce rate is high because a page is not displaying the contents properly.

There might be a blank page or a 404 error (page not found error) that’s causing people to go back to the search results.

So, browse your website from the user’s POV and check if there are obstacles that’s stopping them from getting the information they need.

Under the Coverage tab on the Google Search Console, check if Google pointed out some issues to fix. If there are, then, address it immediately
