Williams Tidbits
Williams, Arizona is filled with history about the Grand Canyon, explorers, cowboys, the old west and a community that is rich stories and history. This community is located in the beautiful grasslands and fine forests of the Ponderosas, which is located Northern Arizona, and, in 1876 was established by sheep and cattle ranchers. The name if the community as well as the mountain peak that overlooks the community. Bill Williams was one of the most trappers and mountain men in the history of the nation, and is the namesake of the community. While Bill Williams didn't reside in the region, he did a considerable amount of traveling, to explore the region as well as being a guide.
In 1881, the population of Williams had increased sufficiently to have a post office. In 1882 the railroad arrived in the community. The community of Williams quickly became a center for industry and the transport of goods from the logging and ranches in the region. With all of this industry also came the rowdy, single working man many of these historic communities were populated with. Next to Saloon Row, which was located next to the railroad tracks, there were gambling houses, saloons, and brothels in order to accommodate the wants of this group of men. Several these buildings are currently still standing. These days, they are the home of bars, restaurants, stores, bed and breakfasts. Williams, Arizona offers visited a great opportunity to enjoy the adventure as well as the history that went along with Arizona becoming a state.
The famous Grand Canyon Hotel was established in Williams in 1892. At that time, the hotel hosted many famous guess and was the closest hotel to the Grand Canyon. Many of the original guest registers are on display in the lobby of hotel for guests to view. Unfortunately, after around 75 years, the hotel was closed for business, when the new interests Interstate bypassed the communities of Williams, Arizona.
However, in 2004, the hotel was restored by Oscar and Amy Frederickson who bought this famous Landmark and started some rather some extensive restoration. In 2005, the boutique style hotel reopened, and is an enchanting place to stay when visitors or tourists' or even locals you are in the region. These delightful rooms are themed with combination of antique charm as well as modern amenities. This is an excellent way for anyone to spend their day of adventures in historic style.
The community of Williams had increased dramatically by 1901. The Santa Fe Railroad was now in Williams, which significantly increased tourism in the region. During this period Williams was considered to be The Gateway to the Grand Canyon. The reason for this was because most visitors and Grand Canyon tourist travel went to the Grand Canyon on wagons or on horseback since Williams was no further away that some 60 miles during in the early days of the Grand Canyon. The addition of the passenger railroad made considerable easier for people to visit this world of wonder.
The Frey Marcos Hotel was one of the historic Harvey Houses. This hotel opened in Williams in order to cater to cross country travelers on the railroad line and those making an adventure for the tourists to visit the Grand Canyon, in 1908. There as a new level of civilization and sophistication in the Wild West that had not been available in this remote location, with the exception of the Harvey Houses. These days, the hotel building and train station are still standing. However, they are only as shops rather than the restaurant that they were once famous for.
With the completion if the historic Route 66 through the community of Williams the residents if the community experienced another boom with the completion of Historic Route 66, which made cross country travel by automobile much easier, and even more travelers went to community as a stop along their way to California or the Grand Canyon in 1926. Travel cross county by automobile was much easier with this historic route.
The gateway to the Grand Canyon is in Williams, Arizona. It only takes a matter of hours to reach the Grand Canyon. The community of Williams, Arizona is a great place to stop for breakfast on the café that is located on Route 66, stroll the streets, go fishing, visit a wild life park, and hop aboard a railroad for some sighting, grab a pole and head out fishing, or simply walk around the streets before driving to the Canyon. Once one of the seven wonders After you have seen one of the seven wonders of the world has been experienced, have a great lunch in the community of Williams and enjoy lunch, relax at a cozy lodging established, shop for custom leather goods, or enjoy a homemade shake.
Williams, Arizona is a wonderful place to live, work, pay and visit. It is a great place to raise a family.
